ElectricSUV – Mahindra XEV 9S Gains Custom Drive Mode Update
ElectricSUV – Mahindra has expanded the feature set of its recently introduced XEV 9S, adding a new Custom drive mode aimed at refining the driving experience. Launched at a starting price of Rs 19.95 lakh (ex-showroom), the electric seven-seater SUV is built on the company’s INGLO platform and marks a significant step in Mahindra’s EV strategy. While the vehicle has drawn attention for its bold styling and spacious cabin, early user feedback on ride dynamics has led to this latest software enhancement.

Greater Control Over Driving Dynamics
The newly introduced Custom mode allows drivers to individually configure key vehicle systems rather than relying solely on preset drive profiles. Owners can now adjust suspension stiffness, steering weight, and powertrain response independently. This flexibility enables a tailored setup suited to varying road and driving conditions.
For example, a driver can select a firmer suspension setting for improved stability on highways while keeping steering feedback light for comfortable city driving. This mix-and-match capability gives the SUV a more adaptable character, especially for those seeking a balance between comfort and handling precision.
Addressing Suspension Concerns
Earlier road tests and owner impressions indicated that the adaptive suspension system — available only on the top-spec Pack Three variant — felt overly soft in certain scenarios. On uneven roads, the setup reportedly resulted in noticeable vertical movement, which affected ride composure.
Although the existing Race mode offered firmer damping and improved body control, it also sharpened throttle response and increased regenerative braking intensity. These changes made the vehicle feel more aggressive, which some drivers found unsuitable for daily commutes. The new Custom mode effectively resolves this concern by allowing users to select firmer suspension settings without altering other comfort-oriented parameters.
Availability Across Variants
Mahindra has confirmed that all newly produced XEV 9S units equipped with adaptive dampers will now feature the Custom drive mode as standard. At present, adaptive suspension technology is limited to the Pack Three trim level, making it the only variant eligible for this update.
The entry-level Pack One and mid-range Pack Two versions continue to use passive dampers and do not offer adjustable suspension. As a result, the newly added customization function will not be available on these trims.
Expanding the Drive Mode Lineup
With the addition of Custom mode, the XEV 9S now offers five distinct drive settings: Default, Everyday, Range, Race, and Custom. Each mode serves a specific purpose. Range prioritizes efficiency and extended driving distance, while Everyday focuses on balanced urban usability. Race delivers sharper responses for spirited driving. The Custom profile now fills the gap by giving drivers control over individual parameters rather than bundling them into predefined combinations.
This expanded lineup strengthens the SUV’s appeal in the competitive electric vehicle segment, where adaptability and user-focused technology are increasingly valued.
Support for Existing Owners
Mahindra has indicated that customers who already own the Pack Three version of the XEV 9S will not miss out on the update. The company is expected to deploy the Custom drive mode either through an over-the-air software rollout or via authorized dealership service support. This approach ensures that early buyers benefit from the latest improvements without requiring hardware modifications.
As competition intensifies in India’s electric SUV market, manufacturers are placing greater emphasis on software-driven enhancements. With the addition of Custom mode, the XEV 9S demonstrates how post-launch updates can refine vehicle performance and respond to customer feedback, reinforcing Mahindra’s focus on evolving EV technology.
