Leading passenger vehicle makers, including Maruti Suzuki India, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Hyundai Motor India, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, and Kia India, posted year-on-year gains across most segments. The two-wheeler market also reflected similar strength, with strong dispatch numbers from key manufacturers.

Maruti Suzuki Records Highest Monthly Sales

Maruti Suzuki India, the country’s largest carmaker, reported domestic passenger vehicle dispatches of 174,529 units in January, slightly higher than the same month last year. Overall, the company achieved its highest-ever monthly total sales at 236,963 units, reflecting steady demand across its portfolio.

While entry-level models such as Alto and S-Presso saw marginal growth, sales of compact cars including Baleno, Dzire, Swift, and Ignis declined compared to last year. In contrast, the utility vehicle segment remained a key growth driver, with models like Grand Vitara, Brezza, Ertiga, and XL6 posting a notable increase in dispatches.

Company officials highlighted strong booking momentum, with new orders crossing 278,000 units during the month. The recently launched SUV Victoris also crossed the 50,000-unit sales mark within five months of its debut. However, the company acknowledged that production constraints may continue for a few more months until additional capacity becomes operational.

Tata Motors and Mahindra Maintain Strong Growth

Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle division reported one of the strongest performances in January, with domestic sales rising to 70,222 units, up from 48,076 units a year earlier. The growth reflects rising acceptance of the company’s SUV-led lineup and expanding electric vehicle offerings.

Mahindra & Mahindra also continued its upward trend, reporting domestic dispatches of 63,510 units, representing a 25 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The company’s consistent demand for SUVs has played a central role in supporting its monthly performance.

Hyundai, Toyota, and Kia See Steady Demand

Hyundai Motor India recorded domestic wholesales of 59,107 units in January, marking a 9 percent year-on-year increase. The company maintained stable volumes amid competitive market conditions.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported domestic sales of 30,630 units, reflecting a 17 percent rise from the previous year. Company executives attributed the growth to customer confidence in the brand’s focus on quality, safety, and sustainable mobility solutions.

Kia India reported sales of 27,603 units, registering a 10 percent increase over January last year. Strong response to the new-generation Seltos, along with steady demand for Sonet and rising interest in Carens Clavis and its electric variant, contributed to the performance.

Renault Posts Sharp Percentage Growth

Renault India, despite operating on a smaller base, reported a significant year-on-year increase of 34 percent in dealer dispatches, reaching 3,715 units in January. The growth signals improving traction for the brand in selected segments.

Two-Wheeler Segment Shows Broad-Based Expansion

The two-wheeler market also recorded robust growth during the month. Hero MotoCorp reported dispatches of 520,208 units, marking a 26 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Royal Enfield posted domestic sales of 93,781 units, reflecting a 16 percent rise, supported by sustained demand for its mid-size motorcycle range.

TVS Motor Company delivered one of the strongest performances in the segment, with domestic two-wheeler sales increasing by 30 percent to 383,262 units in January, compared with 293,860 units a year earlier.

Outlook Remains Positive

Industry participants remain cautiously optimistic about the months ahead, citing healthy order pipelines, improving consumer sentiment, and stable demand across vehicle categories. While supply-side challenges persist for some manufacturers, the overall sales momentum suggests a constructive start to the year for India’s automobile sector.
