AutoTech – Tata Altroz CNG AMT Expands Premium Hatchback Choices
AutoTech – Tata Motors has expanded the Altroz lineup with a new CNG variant paired with a 5-speed automatic manual transmission, marking a significant addition to the premium hatchback market. Priced between Rs 8.7 lakh and Rs 10.77 lakh (ex-showroom), the latest version brings together factory-fitted CNG technology and AMT convenience in a segment where such a combination has not been available until now.

The new Altroz variant strengthens Tata Motors’ position in the competitive hatchback category, where it faces rivals such as the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Toyota Glanza. The addition of the automatic CNG option is aimed at buyers seeking lower running costs without compromising on driving comfort in daily city traffic.
Engine and Performance Details
Under the hood, the Altroz CNG continues with the familiar 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine combined with a dual-cylinder CNG system installed directly from the factory. In CNG mode, the engine generates 73.5 hp and 103 Nm of torque. When running on petrol, the output rises to 88 hp and 115 Nm.
Tata Motors has retained the 5-speed AMT gearbox already available with the petrol-powered Altroz. The move gives customers an automatic transmission option while using cleaner fuel technology. The Altroz also remains one of the few hatchbacks in the category to continue offering a diesel engine alongside petrol and CNG versions.
Cabin Space and Practical Features
The CNG version offers a boot capacity of 210 litres, lower than the 345-litre luggage space available in the petrol and diesel trims due to the placement of the twin-cylinder setup. Despite the reduction, Tata Motors has attempted to maintain everyday practicality for urban users.
The CNG-AMT configuration is available up to the Accomplished S trim level, positioned just below the top-end variant. This allows buyers to access several premium features without moving to the highest-priced model in the range.
Interior and Technology Upgrades
Inside the cabin, the Altroz continues with a premium dashboard layout featuring soft-touch materials and Tata’s Grand Prestigia design theme. The hatchback comes equipped with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen developed in collaboration with Harman.
Other convenience features include ambient cabin lighting, automatic climate control, and an electric sunroof. The infotainment setup is designed to support connected driving functions and multimedia usage aimed at younger urban buyers.
Safety Remains a Key Highlight
Safety continues to be one of the strongest aspects of the Altroz lineup. The hatchback has secured a 5-star safety rating under Bharat NCAP across petrol, diesel, and CNG variants.
Standard safety equipment includes six airbags, electronic stability control, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and reverse parking sensors. Higher variants also receive a 360-degree surround-view camera, tyre pressure monitoring system, and automatic headlamps.
With the launch of the CNG-AMT combination, Tata Motors is targeting customers looking for an affordable automatic hatchback with lower fuel expenses and a strong safety package. The addition further broadens the appeal of the Altroz in India’s growing premium hatchback segment.
