EVSUV – VinFast has taken another step toward expanding its presence in the Indian automobile market by filing a design patent for the updated VF 8 electric SUV. The Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer recently unveiled the second-generation version of the SUV globally, and the latest patent filing in India has sparked discussions about a possible launch strategy for the country. If introduced here, the VF 8 would become the company’s flagship offering, positioned above the VF 7 in its lineup.
Second-Generation Model Signals New Design Direction
The refreshed VF 8 is significant for VinFast because it is the company’s first second-generation vehicle. While the rest of the brand’s portfolio still follows its earlier design approach, the new VF 8 reflects a broader shift in styling and cabin layout. The company appears to be moving toward a cleaner, more premium identity as competition in the electric vehicle market continues to grow worldwide.
One of the most visible changes can be seen in the SUV’s exterior styling. The front section now carries a sharper and more dynamic appearance with redesigned body lines. A slim wing-inspired LED daytime running light stretches across the fascia, with the VinFast logo positioned at the centre. The large gloss-black grille gives the SUV a more aggressive road presence compared to the outgoing version.
Exterior Receives Sportier Styling Updates
At the rear, the SUV features connected LED tail lamps joined by a black trim panel carrying the prominent “V” emblem. The updated model also comes equipped with 19-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels, semi-flush door handles, and chrome detailing around the windows, adding to its premium appeal.
The revised proportions of the SUV are also worth noting. The VF 8 now measures 4,701 mm in length, 1,872 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height. It rides on a 2,840 mm wheelbase and offers a ground clearance of 170 mm. Compared with the previous model, the vehicle has become slightly shorter and narrower, while the wheelbase has also been reduced. However, the overall height and ground clearance have seen minor increases, which may help improve cabin comfort and road usability.
Cabin Layout Gets Modern Technology Upgrades
Inside the cabin, VinFast has introduced a major redesign focused on technology and convenience. The dashboard now features a centrally mounted 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. Although the speaker count has been reduced from the earlier model, the interior gains a new TFT instrument cluster for the driver along with a redesigned steering wheel.
The gear selector continues to remain mounted on the steering column, helping create additional space in the centre console area. Several premium features have also been retained or upgraded. These include Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), dual-zone automatic climate control, seat memory for the driver, and a 360-degree camera setup designed to improve visibility while parking and maneuvering in tight spaces.
Battery and Performance Details Revised
The second-generation VF 8 comes equipped with a smaller 60.13 kWh battery pack. Despite the reduced battery capacity, VinFast claims the SUV can still deliver a driving range of up to 500 kilometres on a full charge. The earlier version used a larger 87.7 kWh battery and offered a claimed range of 562 kilometres.
Another notable change is the removal of the all-wheel-drive option from the latest version. The SUV is now available only with a front-wheel-drive configuration. However, performance figures have improved slightly, with the electric motor now producing 228 bhp and 330 Nm of torque. This represents a modest increase over the previous model’s output.
India Plans Yet to Be Confirmed
VinFast has not officially confirmed a launch timeline for the VF 8 in India. However, the patent filing indicates that the company is actively protecting its design and evaluating opportunities in one of the world’s fastest-growing electric vehicle markets. Industry observers believe the company may gradually expand its portfolio in India as demand for premium electric SUVs continues to rise.
