SUV – The compact SUV segment may soon witness a noticeable shift as automakers begin exploring a new lifestyle-oriented direction in vehicle design. Two concept models, the Renault Bridger and Mahindra Vision S, suggest that manufacturers are preparing to introduce compact vehicles that combine urban practicality with the visual appeal of rugged off-roaders. Expected to arrive around 2027, these vehicles hint at a new category that blends compact size with adventure-inspired styling.

Two manufacturers exploring a similar design philosophy

Both Renault and Mahindra appear to be pursuing a comparable idea with their respective concept models. The Vision S was unveiled during Mahindra’s Freedom NU Event in Mumbai in 2025, where the company introduced several concept vehicles built on its new NU IQ platform. Since its debut, test prototypes of the Vision S have already been spotted on Indian roads, suggesting that development is progressing and that a production version could be launched in the coming years.

Renault, meanwhile, introduced the Bridger Concept as an early look at a new compact SUV that will sit below the returning Renault Duster in the brand’s lineup. The production version of this vehicle is expected to be developed and manufactured in India, with plans to export it to international markets such as Africa, Latin America and the Gulf region.

Although the vehicles originate from different manufacturers, both appear to focus on the same concept: compact SUVs that emphasize lifestyle appeal rather than strictly urban design.

Design approach inspired by rugged off-road vehicles

At first glance, both SUVs follow a design direction that resembles traditional off-road vehicles. Their body shapes are defined by upright surfaces, squared proportions and flat bonnets. These elements give the vehicles a robust and purposeful appearance that stands out in the compact SUV segment.

Additional styling details further strengthen the rugged look. Both concepts feature large alloy wheels, protective body cladding and roof rails that suggest outdoor capability. One of the most notable shared design elements is the side-opening tailgate with an externally mounted spare wheel, a feature often associated with dedicated off-road vehicles.

Despite this strong visual connection to rugged SUVs such as the Mahindra Thar and Maruti Suzuki Jimny, both the Bridger and Vision S are expected to use monocoque construction rather than traditional ladder-frame chassis. This design choice typically provides improved ride comfort, lighter weight and better handling for everyday driving.

Different interpretations of front-end styling

While the overall shape of both vehicles appears similar, the two concepts take different approaches when it comes to front-end design.

The Bridger Concept adopts a cleaner and more contemporary appearance. Its front fascia includes slim LED lighting elements, a gloss-black grille panel and illuminated Renault lettering extending across the front. The bumper design is relatively simple, giving the SUV a refined and modern visual identity.

The Vision S, on the other hand, emphasizes a more rugged character. Its headlamp design is framed within darker trim pieces, and the bumper features heavier cladding that reinforces the off-road theme. The concept also included circular lighting elements and several accessories typically associated with adventure vehicles.

Side profile and lifestyle-focused elements

From the side, both SUVs show strong shoulder lines and upright proportions that help create a muscular stance. The window areas appear relatively large, which could contribute to improved cabin visibility and interior space.

Another shared design detail is the upward kink in the window line near the C-pillar. This styling feature adds movement to the otherwise boxy profile and enhances the visual appeal of the vehicles.

However, the Vision S introduces several lifestyle-oriented accessories that distinguish it from the Bridger. These include roof-mounted auxiliary lamps, side steps and a ladder mounted near the rear. Flush door handles on the concept also add a slightly futuristic element.

The Bridger follows a more restrained approach, featuring traditional pull-type door handles and smoother body surfaces.

Rear design and interior space considerations

At the rear, the similarities between the two SUVs become more pronounced. Both vehicles feature upright tailgates paired with externally mounted spare wheels, which also serve as prominent design features.

Each concept uses distinctive LED tail lamp signatures to create brand identity. The upright rear design is also likely to support better cargo capacity.

Renault has suggested that the production version of the Bridger could offer around 400 litres of luggage space, which would be competitive within the compact SUV segment.

Potential impact on the compact SUV market

Although both vehicles are still in the concept stage, their development progress indicates that production versions could reach showrooms within the next few years. The Vision S has already been seen undergoing road testing, while the Bridger represents an important step in Renault’s renewed strategy for the Indian market.

If both models move forward as expected, the compact SUV segment could soon see a new form of competition focused more on design character and lifestyle appeal rather than purely urban practicality or extreme off-road capability.
