SUV – Renault Plans Wider Duster Range With Budget-Friendly Automatic Variant
SUV – Renault is preparing to strengthen the appeal of its latest-generation Duster in India by adding a more affordable automatic version to the SUV lineup. According to industry reports, the company is evaluating options to reduce the pricing difference between manual and automatic variants, making the convenience of automatic driving accessible to a larger group of customers.

The move comes at a time when demand for automatic transmission vehicles is steadily increasing, particularly among buyers in metropolitan and high-traffic cities. By expanding its transmission offerings, Renault aims to attract customers seeking greater driving comfort without moving into significantly higher price brackets.
Strong Market Debut for the New Duster
Since its launch in March, the new Renault Duster has established a solid presence in the competitive mid-size SUV segment. Introduced at an ex-showroom starting price of Rs 10.49 lakh, the SUV has managed to secure a place among the leading sellers in its category.
The company is also preparing for the arrival of a strong hybrid version later this year. Interest in the upcoming hybrid model has been substantial, with reservation allocations reportedly filling up well into 2026. This early response reflects growing customer confidence in the Duster brand and Renault’s product strategy.
Existing Engine and Transmission Choices
Currently, Renault offers the Duster with two turbocharged petrol engine options. The smaller 1.0-litre engine is available exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox. Buyers looking for an automatic transmission must opt for the larger 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine, which is offered with both a six-speed manual transmission and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic system equipped with an electronic gear selector.
This structure has created a noticeable separation between entry-level manual models and automatic variants, particularly in terms of pricing.
Price Difference Limits Automatic Access
The base ‘Authentic’ version of the Duster starts at Rs 10.49 lakh, while the higher-specification ‘Techno’ trim powered by the 1.0-litre engine reaches Rs 13.49 lakh. In contrast, automatic variants begin from the ‘Evolution’ grade and carry a starting price of Rs 14.49 lakh.
As a result, customers interested in an automatic gearbox currently need to spend considerably more than those choosing manual versions. Industry observers believe that narrowing this gap could make the Duster more attractive to value-conscious buyers who still want the convenience of an automatic transmission.
Possible Strategy Under Consideration
Renault has not officially revealed the exact approach it plans to adopt. However, market expectations suggest two likely possibilities. The company may introduce an automatic transmission option alongside the existing 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, creating a lower-cost automatic entry point.
Another possibility is the introduction of the 1.3-litre automatic powertrain in lower trim levels, including variants that currently remain manual-only. Such a strategy would allow buyers to access automatic technology without paying for additional premium features.
Potential Impact on the Segment
A more affordable automatic Duster could significantly broaden the SUV’s customer base, particularly in urban regions where automatic transmissions are becoming increasingly preferred. The addition would also help Renault enhance the Duster’s competitiveness against established rivals in the mid-size SUV market.
With the hybrid model approaching launch and customer preferences shifting toward convenience-oriented vehicles, expanding the Duster range appears to be a logical next step in Renault’s India growth strategy. A wider selection of variants could help the manufacturer strengthen its position and sustain momentum in one of the country’s most contested automotive segments.
